Is Your Roof Leaking? Check Your Roof Drains!

Clogged roof drains are a problem that persist from the spring to those autumn months. Leaf growth and constant rain aren’t new problems, but their persistence can lead to higher maintenance costs. What is a practical homeowner to do?

Step One – INSPECT IT

Clear out any leaves or debris near your roof drain. Remove the drain cover for further inspection. Grab your trusty flashlight and shine down into the drain to see if you spot any signs of distress or damage.

Step Two – SNAKE IT

Feed a plumbing snake slowly into the drain until the clog is removed. Don’t be worried if it takes a few attempts.

Step Three – HOSE IT

Never forget that water pressure can clear clogs like nothing else! Feed the hose into the drain until it hits the source of the clog. Then, crank the hose up and blast that nuisance away.

Step Four – PIPE BRUSH IT

If you don’t have a plumbing snake, then you need to reach for your trusty pipe brush. It’s the same process as the snake, but make sure to blast some water down the drain after finishing. The pipe brush is handy, but high pressure water might be needed to get the remnants.

Step Five -  ALWAYS CLEAN THE ROOF DRAIN

Cleaning the roof drain should become part of your annual home upkeep routine. The early Fall is the best time to do this, as the trees are beginning to shed their leaves. Use any of the prior steps in an initial phase to prevent having to clear major drains later in the life of your home.

Regular roof drain maintenance is something that any semi-skilled homeowner can undertake.
